I have lived in Newcastle for almost 7 years and never been on a food tour! I was so excited to be invited along to a Triple A Food Tour of Newcastle City Centre! We met at monument at 1pm before heading over to the Grainger Market for our first two stops of the tour before continuing on down the Quayside to the other three stops.
La Casa Delicatessen in the Grainger Market
Our first stop of the Triple A Food Tour was La Casa Delicatessen, literally ‘the home deli’. It’s like a little corner of Spain in Newcastle! There are seats so you can enjoy tapas and a glass of wine imported from the owners village in Spain. They brought us all huge glasses of red and white wine and this delicious tapas board. I really enjoyed the atmosphere sitting eating and chatting with the rest of the group, if you didn’t look out down the rest of the market, you could swear you were in Spain.
If you’re a shopper and a foodie, you will definitely not leave La Casa Delicatessen without a few bits and bobs! You can buy beautiful hand painted tapas plates, bowls, and plenty of Spanish imported food and drink. I was amazed at all the chocolate, crisps, wine and meats that you could choose. I’ve never been to Spain (it’s on the list) but when I showed Rob what could be bought here, we made a vow to visit together next time to get some good stuff for cooking!
Fresh Lindisfarne Oysters at Lindsays in the Grainger Market
Do you love local produce? Then you have to visit Lindsays in the Grainger Market for fresh Lindisfarne oysters. Caught fresh that morning and brought to their shop in the Grainger Market, it’s a must try! You can get them to go for only £1, or they will open them for you to eat right then and there for only £1.75!
We got to try a couple each and you can have them plain, with a squeeze of lemon, with limoncello or with vodka! I have never had them before and was super nervous! I didn’t manage to try them (see the vlog below for details!) Not my finest moment ha but everyone else enjoyed them!
Burgers and Beer at the Bridge Tavern
I’ve spent many an evening in the Bridge Tavern and only tried the food a couple of times so I was excited to try more! Slider burgers paired with a tray of beer? A perfect pairing! The brewer came to talk to us about each of the beers on offer and the burgers were the perfect size as a snack on the tour.
Six at the Baltic
I’ve been to the Baltic before but never up to the top floor to their restaurant, Six. I really didn’t expect to turn up to a fine dining restaurant on this food tour and was very excited in the lift up to the restaurant. We had views across the Quayside and Newcastle, it’s worth a visit just for the view!
The service was impeccable and I really enjoyed the light meats, breads and drinks we got to try! Another restaurant added to my list to come back for a special occasion.
Cakes and Shakes at GB Cupcakery
GB Cupcakery is a MUST MUST visit if you’re in Newcastle. This is the most ‘instagrammable’ place I have ever seen! Think marble, pink, a flower wall, beautiful cakes and the most gorgeous decor! When I found out that it was the final stop, I was super excited! I had never been and was so excited to go.
The GB Cupcakery did not disappoint! On the Triple A Food Tour, you can choose a slice of their huge cakes and a hot drink or try one of their HUGE milkshakes!
I opted for their vegan red velvet cake and a coke, and I was really impressed with it. The cake slice was so huge I couldn’t finish it!
My thoughts on the Triple A Food Tour
The tour is around 3 hours long, the one we took was between 1pm and 4pm. I was worried it would feel rushed or perhaps too slow but it was a pleasant afternoon of food and drink and a casual walking pace. As an asthmatic, I was a little worried about the walking but it’s not far and its all downhill!
Our tour guide Hannah was so friendly and lovely and easy to chat to and ask questions to as we walked round the city centre. As we were a group of locals we didn’t need much of the information that was part of the tour but it was interesting to learn more about the market and the local buildings history!
For the price of £49 a person on the Triple A Food Tour, I really think it’s great value for money considering you get food AND drink in 5 separate eateries! This cost includes beer, wine and a delicious variety of cuisines as well as a guided walk around the city centre! I really recommend this tour, it’s a great way to get out and about and do some sightseeing in the city centre whilst also exploring some of the amazing food that’s on offer! I think it would be a perfect thing to do for a birthday or special occasion!
